The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has awarded a $40m highway project to Sterling Construction Company subsidiary Road and Highway Builders (RHB).

RHB will be responsible for rebuilding 2.67 miles of Pali Highway on the island of Oahu.

The works will include areas of full-depth reconstruction as well as creative phasing to minimise impacts on commuters.

The project is expected to involve many of RHB’s construction capabilities, including excavation, asphalt paving and traffic maintenance.

Sterling CEO Joe Cutillo said: “We welcome the opportunity to perform construction work on the Pali Highway. The highway is one of the most scenic drives in the US, given its elevation and commanding views of Oahu.

“It provides a direct route from Oahu’s south-east coast to the city of Honolulu and is crucial for both passenger and commercial cross-island transport. Our work will help to alleviate traffic and congestion on this widely travelled highway.

“Our RHB business has extensive experience in working in the challenging Oahu terrain, which has enabled us to win another highly attractive project in the Hawaiian Islands.”

Sterling specialises in heavy civil construction, speciality services and residential projects.

The company primarily operates in the southern US, the Rocky Mountain States, California and Hawaii.

In April 2018, Sterling subsidiary Texas Sterling Construction (TSC) received a $60.2m contract to rehabilitate and widen a section of Interstate 10 in Boerne, Texas.

Awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the project comprised 6.2 miles of new asphalt pavement and bridge structures at South Main Street and West Bandera Road.

In November that year, Sterling subsidiary Ralph L Wadsworth (RLW) won a contract to design and reconstruct a section of Interstate 25 in Colorado, together with construction firm SEMA Construction.
