Mapping and location data provider HERE Technologies has opened a new research and development (R&D) facility at Boulder in the US state of Colorado.

The site will see experts in geospatial engineering, machine learning and data science work together on latest processes that enable HERE’s HD Live Map to ‘self-heal’ or update itself.

Crowd-sourced data procured from live car sensors will be utilised to validate and update the HD map to provide accurate and fresh information.

HERE HD Live Map is designed to ensure safety and comfort of autonomous driving.

The self-driving vehicle leverages the map along with its near-field sensors to develop better understanding of the road environment for strategic path planning.

HERE Technologies Automotive and IoT head Ralf Herrtwich said: “We are thrilled to open our new Boulder office and tap into Colorado’s base of talented geo-spatial engineers.

“We look forward to being a champion of the local tech community and working with the area’s academic and civic institutions.”

“HERE Technologies is the place to be for those wanting to tackle exciting engineering projects that will help shape the future of transportation and mobility.

“We look forward to being a champion of the local tech community and working with the area’s academic and civic institutions.”

The HERE Boulder team currently comprises 20 employees and is expected to grow following the hiring of lead and senior software engineers. The team will work in close coordination with other colleagues located worldwide.

The new R&D site is designed to optimise go-to-market speed for HERE’s partners and customers.

Around 20 automotive companies use HERE HD Live Map for their autonomous vehicle R&D.
