Smart city applications developer Telensa has been selected by the Highways Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) to install its PLANet intelligent street lighting system in Yuen Long Town.

The contract forms part of the pilot programme led by engineering services group South King-Kum Shing JV to replace nearly 600 streetlights with wirelessly managed LED lights.

Located in the New Territories, the Yuen Long community has a population of 148,000.

Telensa PLANet is a smart street lighting system comprising wireless nodes connecting individual lights, a dedicated wireless network owned by the city, and a central management application.

It is said to enhance services by automatic fault reporting and the system is also capable of paying for itself in reduced energy and maintenance costs.

“We’re looking forward to working together in future on low-cost smart city applications, enabled by the city’s lighting network.”

One of the most popular connected streetlight system, Telensa PLANet also transforms streetlight poles into hubs for smart city sensors.

Telensa founder and chief commercial officer Will Gibson said: “We’re delighted to be working with our partners, the Highways Department of the HKSARG and South King-Kum Shing JV to pilot an efficient, resilient and smart street lighting system for Hong Kong, one that will be responsive to citizens’ needs for decades to come.

“We’re looking forward to working together in future on low-cost smart city applications, enabled by the city’s lighting network.”

Telensa focuses on developing wireless smart city applications that will help cities across the world to save energy.
