Velodyne Lidar has joined the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) for promoting the advantages of autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation infrastructure.

Members of ITS America will develop autonomous vehicles technology and smart city solutions, enhancing mobility and sustainability to save lives.

Velodyne’s lidar sensors will be used to measure and monitor conditions in areas including pedestrian safety, vehicle traffic and parking space management.

The sensors will collect detailed traffic data about users including vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists, while not revealing individuals’ facial characteristics and maintaining anonymity.

ITS America president and CEO Shailen Bhatt said: “Lidar is a foundational technology that will help drive intelligent mobility in smart city applications and in vehicles on our roadways.

“Velodyne has demonstrated a strong commitment and great skills in advancing public knowledge about lidar and how autonomous technology can greatly improve transportation.

“We welcome their contributions in helping ITS America promote intelligent transportation technologies.”

Furthermore, Velodyne is partnering with University of Nevada, Reno to advance research in transportation infrastructure and also with automotive OEMs and robotaxi and autonomous shuttle companies to enable safe and efficient transportation options for cities.

Velodyne Lidar Communications vice-president Sally Frykman said: “Velodyne Lidar is strongly aligned with the ITS America mission to improve mobility, advance safety on the roadways, and increase efficiency in our communities.

“We envision companies and government organisations will use Velodyne’s lidar sensors to enable a new generation of smart infrastructure through data collection and the deployment of autonomous vehicles.”
