The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced the commencement of construction works on the final phase of the Route 206 Hillsborough Bypass project Contract B.

This $36.6m state and federally funded project will build the final sections of the Bypass in Hillsborough, Somerset County.

The Route 206 Bypass involves the construction of a new 3.6-mile section of Route 206 to the east of the existing highway from Mountain View Road and Old Somerville Road.

As part of the $44m contract, a 1.7-mile centre section of the Bypass was already built and opened in October 2013.

Under the project, the remaining section will be built from Mountain View Road to Hillsborough Road on the southern end, as well as from Amwell Road (CR 514) to Old Somerville Road on the northern end.

“As part of the $44m contract, a 1.7-mile centre section of the Bypass was already built and opened in October 2013.”

The project also includes building a jug-handle ramp on the north-east corner of the Route 206 and Triangle Road / Falcon Road intersection.

Construction works are expected to be completed by 2020.

Konkus, NJDOT’s contractor, has established a temporary alternating traffic pattern to restripe Route 206 to create a work zone during the construction period.

At the northern end, the alternate traffic pattern will be maintained on one lane between Hamilton Road and Opie Road.

After the shift is implemented, traffic movement will be through the eastside of the road to enable utility relocations, drainage, grading, basin upgrades, milling and paving.

A new traffic pattern is expected to be implemented later on the southern end of the project from the bridge over Pike Run to Pierson Drive.

In addition to the Hillsborough Bypass, NJDOT is working on two other projects to improve Route 206 in Hillsborough in a bid to enhance safety and reduce congestion through the township.
