Welsh police are turning to number plate recognition technology to catch criminals on local roads.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology identifies vehicles with criminal activity or a traffic offence, regardless of speed, weather or lighting conditions.

Wales’ Dyfed Powys police are among the agencies that will use the technology that can detect up to about 127,000 vehicles a month.

Dyfed Powys chief inspector Phil Davies said: “ANPR is particularly valuable to road safety, highlighting individuals driving without insurance, driving licence or MOT.”
