A popular networking website community has successfully lobbied the Australian government for a A$200m grant to upgrade a deadly section of highway.

The Facebook ‘Upgrade the Bruce Highway to 4 Lanes’ group has about 3,000 members and had written to the Prime Minister concerning the safety hazards that a particular stretch of highway poses to passengers.

In response, the North West Roads general manager has committed $200m of government money to improve a 65km section between Cooroy and Curra.

The refurbishment will include laying low-noise asphalt, earth mounds and implementing downward directional lighting to reduce collisions.
