Roads in the Australian state of Queensland will be monitored by 53 new traffic officers as a part of road safety package and to minimise the road fatalities observed this year.

An additional 53 officers will be recruited across the state with majority being allocated outside the Brisbane metropolitan area. A new District Traffic Branch for the new Coomera Police District will be established with ten officers.

The road safety package also includes additional devices to support the traffic police such as hand held laser speed detectors mobile radar speed detection devices along with micro-digicams. Speed cameras will be installed at fixed locations and extra Q-Cars are added to the fleet of Q-Cars patrolling Queensland roads.

Current ratio of traffic officers to police officers, average number of fatal road crashes, the proximity of police stations are some of the issues considered before deploying these 53 officers.
