Ten new variable message signs (VMS) will be set up at highly congested traffic areas in Collier County, Florida to enhance motorists’ awareness of traffic and road conditions.

These signs will be programmed and operated remotely from the Collier County Traffic Operations Department’s existing Traffic Management Center.

The Florida department of transport (FDOT) is funding 90% of this project. The signs will cost US $0.25m to design and US $0.5m to construct and install.

Collier County’s Traffic Operations Department director Bob Tipton said, “The signs will increase the safety and effectiveness of the county’s roadway network and also assist in emergency management and evacuations.”

The signs, designed and built by URS Inc., will alert drivers when there’s an accident on the roads before they reach the intersection allowing them to take an alternate route.
