A council in London, UK, is looking into the installation of brighter and more energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) -based street lights to make streets safer and reduce costs.

Hackney Council is trialing a range of options for LED lanterns that burn up to 100,000 hours, which if approved, will be installed by street lighting contractor Volker Highways MEWS.

Alleyways and dimly lit communal areas will particularly be targeted.

The LED lighting systems from five different manufacturers will be installed in five sites and the product which provides the best levels of lighting and most favourable feedback from residents is likely to be used throughout the region.
