Washington DC’s Department of Transportation has awarded a $260m design-build contract to US companies Skanska and Facchina Construction to construct three bridges across the Anacostia river and two interchanges.

Out of the three proposed bridges, two will have separate spans and each will have three lanes in one direction.

The bridge crossing will connect the Southeast Freeway and Interstate to the 295/Anacostia Freeway.

The third crossing will connect local traffic between the city sections on each side of the Anacostia via a single bridge span with four lanes, two in each direction.

The project also includes the reconstruction of a interchange on the west side of the river and the reconstruction of the second interchange on the east side.

The project is expected to be delivered in May 2013.
