European researchers and vehicle manufacturers are collaborating to develop a wireless communication system that will instantly alert car and truck drivers across Europe about road conditions to avoid accidents.

The communication system is being developed under the Safespot project, an initiative co-funded by the European Commission to design cooperative systems for road safety based on vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication.

The system will allow drivers to share information among themselves about hazardous roads through the instantly transmitted wireless system even in rough weather conditions.

Volvo Trucks traffic and product safety director Carl Johan Almqvist said the European team was already way ahead in the development of this technology.
