UK company Amey has won a contract for £2.7bn in highway maintenance for Birmingham City Council.

The company will improve and maintain the city’s 2,500km road network, almost 100,000 street lights and over 850 highway structures and bridges for 25 years.

Work includes maintenance of footways, bridges, street lighting and traffic signals as well as the upkeep of street scenery.

The company will also help in developing the traffic management strategy for a road network in the city by implementing the new technology.

Work is expected to begin in April 2010.
