The Denmark Traffic Department has proposed a DKK8bn (approximately $1.5bn) plan to build a fifth 70km ring road around the capital city of Copenhagen.

If approved, the Ring 5 will stretch from Helsingør Motorway in a south western direction to Køge.

The project is aimed at reducing congestion on existing ring roads near the city and promote the use of public transport.

The road could also help boost the economy as studies warn that the city could lose DKK11bn in lost productivity by 2015 due to traffic jams.

The plan will be studied for feasibility and the final decision is expected in nearly two years.
