Zimbabwe will start charging motorists for using its major highways to raise much-needed funds to overhaul the country’s road network.

Makeshift tollgates have been installed on highways for collecting the toll that will be used to renovate highways, including converting some into two-lane motorways.

Toll fees ranging from ZIM$1 to ZIM$5 will be charged for all vehicles including foreign registered ones. Only the government vehicles and social-service providing vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades will be exempt.

The Transport Minister says a number of investors have expressed interest for road projects on a build, operate and transfer basis, according to news site africanmanager.com.
