UK-based O2 and Telmap are to offer personal navigation and mapping services to drivers and pedestrians with GPS-enabled handsets.

Using Telmap’s Navigator, customers using O2 handsets can access the in-car 3D maps enabled with text-to-speech technology for traffic alerts and alternative route options.

The customers can also access content such as places and businesses, event ticketing, restaurant listings and reviews. The service also offers turn-by-turn directions for people on foot.

The O2 handsets will also feature access to O2 Academy music venues and Wi-Fi hotspots.

Customers can pay for the Telmap service through a subscription charge integrated onto their mobile phone bill.

The first handsets with the navigation and mapping facility are expected to be launched in the autumn.
