Spanish firm Telvent has won a €8m contract from Interbiak to install the toll management system for the new Bilbao southern bypass (South Metropolitan Highway) in Spain.

The toll system will be a mix of conventional and electronic tolling, featuring two “free flow” gantries to detect the entry of a vehicle.

The company will supply the management software for the system as well as the equipment needed to ensure security for collection management.

The system will be installed into the A8 bypass section within the province of Biscay to relieve congestion caused more than 100,000 vehicles that pass through Bilbao along the A8 every day.

The 36km Bilbao southern bypass is aimed at reducing congestion, controlling the number of accidents and cutting down greenhouse gas emissions in the Bilbao metropolitan area.
