Local communities in Buckinghamshire, UK, are using a new speed monitoring device called ‘Community Speedwatch’ developed by Traffic Technology Limited to track vehicles breaking speed limits while passing through their area.

The initiative is community-driven and makes use of local volunteers who operate the system and select monitoring sites from local areas of concern suggested by the community.

Community Speedwatch uses a handheld computer remotely linked via Bluetooth in combination with a side-firing speed detection radar gun.

The new system replaces the need to point conventional radar guns at passing motorists, thereby minimising chances of confrontation between motorists and community volunteers.

Ten local areas of the county in association with Buckinghamshire County Council and Thames Valley Police, using local volunteers have set up the new technology to monitor traffic.
