Work has begun on the £3.6m Phase Two Link Road project in Barrow in the UK aimed at improving infrastructure and revitalising businesses in the area.

The new road, which will run between North Road and Hindpool Road, has received a £3m grant from the Northwest Regional Development Agency as well as £500,000 from Cumbria County Council and £100,000 from Barrow Borough Council.

UK-based Askam Construction has been awarded a major £1.35m contract, North West Evening Mail reports.

The first phase of the 280m link road was completed in 2008, which involved improvements in the Cornmill Crossing/Hindpool Road area of Barrow, the news service said.

The link road is expected to give better access to the Waterfront area and attract private sector investment in the area to boost its economy.
