The Georgia Department of Transportation in the US is planning a $112m project to widen a 7 mile stretch on the busy US 441 road from two to four lanes.

The two-lane stretch extends from north of Clayton to the North Carolina line and provides a route through the Rabun County towns of Dillard and Mountain City.

Work includes adding sidewalks on each side of the roadway in Dillard and Mountain City, widening a bridge over Little Tennessee River and building a new bridge over Betty Creek.

A 20ft-wide raised concrete median is also part of the plan to branch the directions of traffic in the region. This will exclude Dillard where the median will be 6ft wide.

The speed limit on the road would be 45 mph.
