The Utah Department of Transportation in the US has signed a deal with technology provider Convergys to provide voice-hosting services for its traveller information telephone system.

The company will provide its on-demand speech self-service system for the department’s voice-activated 511 telephone service over the next ten years.

The company will also upgrade, design, build, implement, operate and maintain the 511 system.

The 511 service enables users access to real-time information on traffic and road conditions, travel times, weather forecasts, and public transit and ferry information throughout the state using either voice-activated or touchtone commands.

The service has been assigned by the Federal Communications Commission for nationwide access to traveller information services.
