The $532m South Tri-State Tollway Rebuild & Widen Project in the US state of has opened four new lanes as it prepares to launch at the end of this year.

The project, which began in 2007, involves widening the road from 159th Street to 95th Street.

Work on the road includes rebuilding and widening northbound lanes, as well as rebuilding interchanges at 95th Street.

The project is being undertaken by tollway operator Illinois Tollway and is part of the operator’s $6.3bn Congestion-Relief Programme.

The programme includes upgrading the nearly entire existing road system, converting 20 mainline toll plazas to barrier-free Open Road Tolling and extending I-355 south to I-80 in Will County.
