Rwanda is planning to set up modern weighbridges to help enforce axle-load limits and measure gross vehicle mass at all border posts.

The country estimates that between 20%-40% of roads and bridges are damaged by overloading .

At present, most of the existing weighbridges in the country are non-functional, making it difficult to enforce axle-load limits on the 14,000km road network.

The plan is an attempt to reduce pressure on roads, which are being affected due to a rise in the volume of cargo transported, which had risen to 950 million tons in 2008 from 670 million tons in 2001.
