Scotland’s national transport agency, Transport Scotland, will introduce a new interactive electronic queue monitoring system at the M74 upgrade programme site.

On behalf of Transport Scotland, the contractor Amey will install the hi-tech system on a stretch of motorway that runs close to Hamilton.

The technology will monitor traffic flow and relay messages to motorists through a variable message sign (VMS) about half a mile from the M74 project site.

Information transmitted from the monitoring system via radio and twitter services is expected to alert drivers and reduce accidents.

The system is also expected to direct motorists towards alternative routes during the two-week period of the M74 upgrade programme, which is scheduled to start mid-November.
