Israeli firm Elbit Systems has unveiled a new handheld night observation system (NOX) to help law enforcement and patrolling agencies identify vehicle and driver details in adverse weather conditions.

The device uses night vision technology involving sensors, lasers, cameras and advanced image processing capabilities to identify details such as facial features and licence plates – even in total darkness.

The system is portable, lightweight and operates on commercial batteries, eliminating the need for a fixed power source.

The device is effective for border guard and coast guard forces, customs police and anti-terror units, the company said.
