UK’s Freight Transport Association (FTA), the trade organisation for truckers, has launched a new a satellite navigation system designed specifically for lorry drivers.

The system, TomTom GO 7000, will help truck drivers to avoid obstacles such as low bridges on their delivery routes, unsuitable routes and narrow roads including ones with no statutory restriction.

The drivers need to enter their vehicles’ weight and dimensions into the system to receive information on clearance heights, weight restrictions, speed restrictions and problematic sharp turns.

The system can be adapted to suit a variety of different size vehicles, and a map share function will allow drivers to make corrections to their map by adding their own access restriction information.

The product is expected to save money and time and prevent congestion on the country’s urban and rural road networks.
