The EU has adopted a new regulation that will require tyre manufacturers to declare their tyres’ fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise performance.

Under the Tyre labelling regulation that will come into effect from November 2012, tyre manufacturers will have to display the tyre performance data in advertisements for consumers and fleet managers.

The grading system used for advertisements will be similar to that of household appliances in the EU and will vary from green A class for best-performance to red G class for worst.

The move is expected to deliver fuel savings of between 2.4 and 6.6 million tons of oil equivalent in 2020 and also provide CO2 emissions savings of up to 4 million tons per year, the equivalent of taking 1.3 million cars off EU roads.
