Swedish firm Skanska has won a $141m contract from the Surrey County Council in the UK to renovate street lighting in the area.

The company, along with consortium partner John Laing, will finance, design, construct, operate and maintain the stock of lighting columns for a period of 25 years.

Over the next five years, nearly 70,000 street lights will be replaced and a further 19,000 renovated and fitted with energy-efficient bulbs, the company said.

The contract period begins in March 2010 and work will be carried out by Skanska UK.
