Dutch firm Smartrac has been selected to supply windshield labels for a radio-frequency-identification technology project in the Philippines.

The contract has been awarded by the Philippines’ firm Stradcom, which is handling the IT for the traffic management project under a deal with the Philippine Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

Smartrac’s windshield labels are tamper-proof, passive, have UV protection and feature several security features to ensure that the vehicle data is only accessible by authorised readers of the LTO and the Philippine police, the company said.

The company will provide the windshield to Malaysia-based firm Free2move Scientific, which is providing the total RFID hardware system to Stradcom for the project.

The project is one of the first country-wide implementations of RFID technology for traffic management in the world, said Smartrac.
