The UK Highways Agency and the Environment Agency have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see them work towards environmentally sustainable motorway and road projects.

The agreement sets out areas and guidelines for the two agencies to work together on, including water environment, waste, incident management and information exchange.

It is hoped by both agencies that through working together waste from road construction and maintenance will be reduced, new drainage systems developed and flood risk and water quality will also be addressed.

The agreement also calls for joint training and provision of specialist equipment to reduce pollution after road incidents such as spillages.
