The City Council of Torrevieja in Spain has announced a plan to install a telecommunications infrastructure system for traffic management in the city.

The Intelligent Video and Radar Assertive Torrevieja (VIRIATO) project involves the installation of video cameras and radar systems for traffic control throughout the city, capturing images that will be monitored by a new control centre.

The system will allow for the auto detection and storage of information about a vehicle’s position and velocity over time, possible violations of traffic rules as well as control and management of traffic signals.

The €1.62m project will be funded from the city’s €11m plus budget.
