Airports, roads and rail services were disrupted due to a record breaking snowstorm, which hit areas across the northeastern US from North Carolina to New England on 19 December.

The worst blizzard in years crippled air and road/rail traffic as well as affected sales during the busiest shopping season in the Washington region alongside power outages.

The accumulation of heavy snow on the roads affected bus services as roads remained slippery, making movement difficult.

It is the heaviest snow storm ever to hit the US capital region, according to the National Weather Service.

Stretched 500 miles across a dozen states, the storm affected about a quarter of the US population.
