The UK’s Regional Development Agency One North East says it will install 619 publicly available free charging points for electric cars by early 2011 in North East England.

This follows a deal with car manufacturer Nissan Motor, which will supply Nissan LEAF electric vehicles to the region.

The deal is aimed at developing zero emission mobility in the region, the agency said.

The charging points will support 3KW and 7KW charges including 12 50KW rapid-charging stations, with free electricity available until March 2012.

The agency will now work with regional partners to develop incentives for people driving electric vehicles that include introducing at least 200 free-of-charge, dedicated public parking places by November 2010.
