The UK Met Office has warned of treacherous driving conditions across Scotland and Northern Ireland, forecasting a band of snow heading towards London from northern Scotland.

The freezing conditions are expected to last until the middle of January and motorists have been asked to take extra care on the icy roads.

The Scottish Government has said councils will have enough salt and grit to spread on roads, despite media reports that supplies are running short.

Poor weather conditions are expected to result in more snow everywhere, with snow showers expected to sweep south.

This could result in temperatures falling to -5°C overnight, including in London, and 0°C during the day.
