The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City in the UAE has installed a new signal system on the city’s Corniche Street, which displays the time pedestrians have to wait before crossing the road.

The countdown pedestrian signalling system uses a countdown digital timer to tell the waiting time along with the timescale allotted for crossing.

The recently finished trial run of the system on the street has shown that it helped cut traffic accidents by 50%.

The system was also found to be effective in streamlining traffic and pedestrian movement at the intersections, and bringing down the number of accidents, according to the municipality.

The municipality now plan to install the system at other intersections of the city in the near future, with priority being given to those with the heaviest pedestrian traffic.
