The UK government will provide £620m ($969m) to seven local authorities in England to upgrade their existing street lighting.

The Private Finance Initiative funding includes £125.47m ($196m) for Durham and Stockton, £163.86m ($256m) for Essex, £80.183m ($125m) for Gloucestershire, £139.8m ($219m) for Hertfordshire, £65.8m ($103m) for Kirklees, £45.5 ($71m) for Warrington.

The authorities will be able to begin with the procurement process after the Department and the Interdepartmental Project Review Group approves their outline business case for the street lighting schemes.
