The Alabama Senate in the US has approved a $1bn plan to carry out road and bridge construction in the state over the next ten years.

Under the plan, $25m would be used each year in cities and counties for roads and bridges and $74m would be used in every county by the state Department of Transportation over the decade-long period.

According to estimates, the minimum amount of money to be spent in each county over the period would lie between $5m and $54m, according to businessweek.com.

Last week the state received just over $8m from the remaining funds of the Recovery Act bringing its total up to $513m in federal stimulus money.
