A new technology that will help drivers navigate through risky road conditions is being developed by General Motors (GM).

The enhanced vision system involves night vision, navigation and camera-based sensors.

The sensors can change windshields into transparent displays, which light up the edges of driving lanes.

The system enhances both visibility and object detection, alerting drivers to dangers such as roadside animals, children and motorcycles.

The technology, which can project key information onto the windshield, also allows motorists to focus on the roadway and not the instrument panel.

The system will be a take on head-up display technology designed by GM in 1988.
