The Brooklyn Bridge in New York, US, is getting a $500m upgrade, its first in a decade.

The makeover plan, which is expected to be complete in four years, involves repainting and repairing the 1.1 mile suspension bridge.

Work will also involve upgrading the bridge approaches from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides, expanding the ramps from one to two lanes and building pavements.

The project secured $30m from federal funds while the rest has been secured from the city and other federal sources, according to the Associated Press.
