Ireland’s Road Safety Authority (RSA) said that excessive or inappropriate speeding led to 80 deaths on the country’s roads in 2009.

The authority said speeding was the main cause for one-third of road deaths in Ireland and 11,000 fatalities in the EU.

Reducing speed by 5% could save around 50 lives and prevent about 100 serious injuries on Irish roads every year, according to the RSA.

An Irish official said one-third of the people killed on Irish roads are pedestrians.
