The US state of Virginia will invest $5.7bn in constructing highways under a new $7.8bn transport plan.

The funds are expected to be used for bicycle, pedestrian and highway projects under a six-year improvement plan.

The plan focuses on funding deficits on projects already underway, as well as deficient bridges and pavements.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board also adopted budgets for the Virginia Department of Transportation, according to businessweek.com.
