The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has accepted amendments to the scheme to dual 17km of the A46, which links the East and West Midlands in England.

The amendments include side roads and private access at nine separate locations along the A46 Newark to Widmerpool scheme, which is currently underway.

The A46 work involves dualling the last remaining single carriageway section between a junction north of Leicester and Newark Western Relief Road.

UK minister Mike Penning said that the improvements will reduce congestion, improve safety and provide a bypass.

The dualling scheme for regional road the A6 is scheduled to open in 2012, according to the DfT.
