The Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme could make drivers more aware of cyclists in London, according to the UK-based Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The scheme introduces easily accessible bikes throughout the city centre to encourage more people to use bicycles on the UK capital’s roads.

IAM Cycling development manager Duncan Pickering said research shows that many drivers are not looking out for cyclists as they are not as common as cars on the road.

“With the critical mass of cyclists going up, drivers will be more aware and be looking out for people on bikes around town,” Pickering said.

It is hoped the initiative will benefit the health of Londoners who rent the bikes as well as bringing environmental and economic advantages.
