An ongoing traffic jam on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway in China started on 14 August due to road construction work and is expected to continue until mid-September.

The construction work is on one of the three southbound highways connecting to Beijing.

The authorities are trying to ease the 100km tailback by allowing more trucks into the capital, especially during night times.

Trucking companies have been advised to suspend operations and drivers have been urged to take the few alternate routes available.

Traffic has also increased on the highway because of the opening of coal mines in northwest China, according to The Associated Press.
