The Highways Agency in the UK has installed motorway message signs in Cumbria, which display warnings of incidents and bad weather to drivers using the motorway.

The eight large overhead signs along the M6 in Cumbria are the first motorway signs to be installed in England’s north-west that display pictures as well as words.

More signs are being installed in Lancashire this week.

The signs display pictures, words and internationally recognised symbols which can be understood by non-English speaking drivers.

The signs have also been linked to roadside weather monitors and automatically display adverse weather warnings.
