Plans for a new bridge over the River Mersey in Halton, England, have been submitted to the government’s spending review by the local council.

Halton Borough Council’s Mersey Gateway project includes a proposal to build a six-lane toll bridge between Runcorn and Widnes.

Several business leaders have backed the scheme and said the bridge is a critical infrastructure link for the region.

The Mersey Gateway project was delayed by the coalition government in June, along with all transport schemes in the planning process across England.
