Saudi Arabia has increased the number of traffic monitoring cameras along expressways in the central and western regions in order to reduce accident rates.

The Saher automated traffic camera system uses cameras and computers to control and monitor vehicle speeds and traffic intersections, and automatically pinpoints dangerous motorists on the road.

The highways where the system is installed include parts of Riyadh-Al-Hijaz, Riyadh-Qassim, Makkah-Jeddah-Madina and some coastal roads.

The high-tech system detects violators by using a network of digital cameras linked with the National Information Center of Ministry of Interior.
