The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in the US will trial a new speed sensing technology for a new road construction project in Southern Illinois.

The agency will install speed sensors on the road while computers will calculate the estimated time required to travel through the construction zone.

IDOT and Southern Illinois Asphalt Company will begin a rubblisation project on Interstate 57, northbound lanes from the Franklin-Jefferson county line to the north.

Work on southbound lanes will be completed next year, according to thesouthern.com.

IDOT has also teamed with Illinois State Police to install troopers at the construction site to monitor activities such as speeding and cell phone use.
