The US State of Washington has started testing the latest addition to Smarter Highways technology, designed to increase safety and reduce collisions on SR 520.

The project includes testing new electronic signs installed on SR 520 between 130th Ave Northeast in Bellevue and Interstate 5 in Seattle.

A series of test sequences on the new electronic signs will be rolled out to check their availability for the future road operations.

The signs will automatically alert drivers to decrease their speed or change lanes when collisions or backups block the traffic ahead, according to pnwlocalnews.com.

The new traffic technology addition is a part of the active traffic management project that adds electronic speed limit and lane status signs on SR 520 and I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle.
