Surrey County Council in the UK has won a national award for its streetlight replacement scheme that will save the authority £12m ($18.6m) over a 25-year period.

The scheme won the best public procurement category in this year’s CIPS Supply Management Awards.

The council has entered into an agreement with UK-based consortium Skanska Laing to replace or upgrade the county’s 89,000 streetlights.

The new street lighting technology is considered more efficient than the current system and will lead to financial and energy savings.
